Quick Guide
  • Staff of Light is a power level 4 masterwork magic staff crafted at the Mystic Forge.

  • Farm Wild Anima, Blightwood, Sapphires, Vault Cores, and Vault Shards before crafting.

  • Bring iron tools (tier 4) and healing food; the swamp leg requires anti-poison potions.

Staff of Light Overview and Stats

The Staff of Light in RuneScape: Dragonwilds is a power level 4 masterwork staff that stands out as one of the strongest early-to-mid game magic weapons. It deals high rune damage from range, and its special effect gives it a higher rune damage modifier than most other staves at the same power level — only the Necromancer's Staff edges it out by 0.1.

Here is how the Staff of Light compares on paper:

StatValue
Power Level4
Damage TypeMagic
Attack StyleStaff
Rune Damage4.5
Attack Combo4
Special EffectIncreased Damage
Durability1,300
Weight15.0 kg
Why Durability Matters

With 1,300 durability, the Staff of Light has 20% more durability than the Necromancer's Staff (1,050). While Magical Mending makes repairs easy, the extra durability can matter in long endurance content like the 30 waves of the Fight Caves.

The staff can also be ascended at the Mystic Forge using ascension cores:

Power LevelRune DamageAscension Cores Needed
55.81 (Power Level 5 core)
67.21 (Power Level 6 core)

Unlocking the Recipe: Highlighting the Problem Walkthrough

The crafting recipe is locked behind the Highlighting the Problem quest. Here is the full flow:

1

Find the Temple Statue

Head to the far-left area of the first region, past Temple Woods. Clear nearby enemies first so they do not interrupt the dialogue, then speak to the Saradomin temple statue (Ramus Lumen). Its riddle cannot be answered directly — it will instead grant you the quest.

2

Enter the Nearby Dungeon

Near the law rune vent there is a drop point leading down into a dungeon. Dropping in causes some fall damage, so bring healing food. You do not need to complete the dungeon — you only need to reach a specific chamber.

3

Reach the Second Statue

Fight or sneak past the vault keepers until you find the chamber with the hanging structure near the vault core. Use Wind Step to climb up into the upper passage, where a second statue tells you the answer to the riddle.

4

Answer the First Statue

Return to the original statue and interact. Choose the Fenturock option. The statue will then task you with activating a set of lightning rods.

5

Activate Three Lightning Rods

Find the three ceiling-mounted lightning spires in the back area. Use boxes, ledges, hills, and Wind Step to reach each one and interact with it. There is a small chest near the third rod worth grabbing. Once all three are active, return to the statue to unlock the Staff of Light recipe.

Do Not Come Too Early

Attempt this quest only after you have crafted the iron pickaxe and iron logging axe (tier 4 tools). You need them anyway to gather the crafting materials, and the dungeon enemies will punish an under-leveled character.

Crafting Materials and Farming Routes

Crafting happens at the Mystic Forge and requires Artisan level 100 plus the following materials:

MaterialQuantityWhere to Get It
Blightwood16White root offshoots in Blood Blight Swamp (logging axe)
Wild Anima8Crafted in a Kiln from Anima-Infused Bark
Anima-Infused Bark32Under white-barked, red-leaved trees in Fractured Plains
Sapphire12Rare drops from gold ore nodes in the swamp area
Vault Shard4Dungeon loot from any vault
Vault Core1Dungeon loot from any vault

Fractured Plains Route

  • Look for large white trees with red leaves
  • Collect Anima Bark on the ground
  • Kiln it into Wild Anima back at base

Blood Blight Swamp Route

  • Bring anti-poison potions
  • Chop white root offshoots with a logging axe
  • Farm gold nodes for Sapphires while you are there

Dungeon Farming

  • Run any vaults during normal play
  • Stockpile Vault Cores and Vault Shards
  • Passive — no dedicated trip required
One-Trip Farming

Players have reported finding all 12 Sapphires in a single swamp session just by checking every gold node. Keep the anti-poison potions active and you can gather everything for the Staff of Light in one go.

Before You Craft:

  • Craft the iron pickaxe and iron logging axe (tier 4 tools)
  • Reach Artisan level 100
  • Build or locate a Mystic Forge at your base
  • Complete Highlighting the Problem
  • Stockpile healing food and anti-poison potions

Staff of Light vs. Other Staves

How does the Staff of Light stack up against the competition?

StaffPower LevelKey StrengthWeakness
Staff of Light4Highest-in-class rune damage modifier, 1,300 durabilityHeavier gathering requirements
Necromancer's Staff40.1 higher rune damageOnly 1,050 durability (20% less)
Oak Battlestaff3Easy to craft earlyLower damage tier
Grieving Moonstaff3Accessible power level 3 optionOutscaled quickly
Damage Breakpoints

The 0.1 rune damage gap versus the Necromancer's Staff only matters if it changes how many hits it takes to kill a specific enemy. For most content, the Staff of Light performs essentially identically while lasting longer between repairs.

In-lore, the staff was blessed by a priest, a monk, and an icyene general in the Third Age, and carried by Saradominist battlemages who dove into battle against Zamorak's forces — the staff's defensive magic reportedly kept its wielders alive longer than their comrades.

Patch History and Ascension

The Staff of Light has received meaningful updates since launch:

DatePatchChange
June 17, 20260.8.0Weight changed from 6.0 kg to 15.0 kg; description and journal text polished
June 23, 20260.12.0Crafting moved from the Smithing Anvil to the Mystic Forge
July 29, 20260.12.1Staff can now be ascended to the highest power level via ascension cores
Ascension Strategy

Since the 0.12.1 update, hold onto any ascension cores you find. Ascending the Staff of Light to power level 6 pushes its rune damage to 7.2, keeping it competitive deep into the game.

FAQ

Q: How do I unlock the Staff of Light recipe in Dragonwilds?

Complete the Highlighting the Problem quest. Speak to the Saradomin temple statue west of Temple Woods, find the second statue inside the nearby dungeon (use Wind Step to skip most of it), answer with the Fenturock option, then activate the three lightning rods to unlock the recipe.

Q: Where do I craft the Staff of Light?

At the Mystic Forge, since the 0.12.0 update on June 23, 2026. You need Artisan level 100 plus 16 Blightwood, 8 Wild Anima, 12 Sapphires, 4 Vault Shards, and 1 Vault Core.

Q: Is the Staff of Light better than the Necromancer's Staff?

The Necromancer's Staff has 0.1 higher rune damage, but the Staff of Light has 20% more durability (1,300 vs 1,050). The damage difference is negligible unless it changes hit-count breakpoints on specific enemies.

Q: Where is the best place to farm Sapphires?

Gold ore nodes in the Blood Blight Swamp area. Sapphires drop as a rare bonus from mining gold, and players have gathered all 12 needed in a single farming session.
