Quick Guide
  • Velgar is one of Queen Kuldra's generals, laired at Velgar's Rise in the Fractured Plains.
  • He roams Ashenfall and randomly attacks with poison breath and meteor barrages.
  • Summon him by crafting a challenge horn from a dragon tooth, dragonkin sigils, and metal wires.
  • He is weak to water magic; bring cheap weak anti-poison potions, not lesser versions.
  • Drops always include Velgar's Head and 30-40 Ascension Shards (Power Level 4).

Who Is General Velgar?

General Velgar, also called the Big High War God by goblins who witnessed Bandos retreat from him, is one of Queen Kuldra's most feared disciples. Bred and enslaved by the dragonkin architect Brakka as a beast of burden, Velgar rose to power after defeating Bandos in single combat — a wound that permanently corrupted the region now known as Bloodblight Swamp. Today he rules much of Ashenfall with goblin followers and garou subjects, and he periodically attacks adventurers in the wild.

Velgar's Attack Mechanics & How to Counter Them

Understanding Velgar's kit is the difference between a clean kill and a corpse run. His mechanics escalate as the fight progresses — claw attacks start at one and scale up to four, and poison circles grow more extensive in later phases.

Video Highlights:

  • Air magic underperforms because Velgar is weak to water magic
  • Use the cheapest weak anti-poison instead of the lesser version — you get poisoned constantly
  • Stay away from large poison balls and dodge descending claws
  • Claws escalate from one to four as the fight continues
  • A lesser focus attack potion grants a 15% XP boost to attack skills during the fight

Poison Breath

  • Inflicts poison frequently
  • Cure with weak anti-poison potions
  • Strafing runs after patches

Meteor Barrage

  • Rocks fall in marked circles
  • Blocked by player-built roofing
  • Blocked inside caverns

Claw Attacks

  • Starts with one claw
  • Escalates to four claws
  • Keep moving to dodge
Do Not Craft Lesser Anti-Poison

The ingredients are not worth it. Save the cheaper weak anti-poison and use it liberally — trying to overcome poison stacks with the lesser version wastes resources mid-fight.

How to Summon and Fight Velgar

Velgar will not simply wait for you at his lair. To challenge him, you must craft a challenge horn modeled on Cathan's design.

1

Gather the Challenge Horn Materials

You need a dragon's tooth carved with dragonkin sigils, plus metal wires connected in a lattice formation — resembling a spiderweb laced with traces of magical power, per the recovered journal entry.

2

Craft the Challenge Horn

Combine the materials at your crafting station. The recipe unlocks as you progress through the Dragon Slayer storyline.

3

Travel to Velgar's Rise

Head to the Fractured Plains and locate Velgar's lair. Consider fighting near interior spaces or under built roofing to negate his dragonbreath and meteors.

4

Use Water-Aligned Damage

Velgar is weak to water magic. If your magic power is low, a strong ranged option like a good longbow with bronze arrows works as a fallback.

5

Manage Poison and Positioning

Sip weak anti-poison whenever poisoned, avoid poison balls and marked meteor circles, and stay mobile during the claw phases.

XP Optimization

Drink a lesser focus attack potion before the pull — it grants a 15% XP boost to every attack skill, so you earn more experience from each point of damage dealt during the fight.

Patch History

Since the 0.7.x patches, Velgar's random wild events were reduced — meteor barrages dropped from 5 to 2 per event, and poison breath events are strafing runs only. As of 0.10.1, he no longer attacks the player after being defeated.

FAQ

Q: Where is General Velgar located in Dragonwilds?

Velgar's lair, Velgar's Rise, is located in the Fractured Plains. However, you cannot simply walk in and fight him — you must first craft a challenge horn from a dragon's tooth carved with dragonkin sigils and metal wires in a lattice formation.

Q: What is Velgar weak to?

Velgar is weak to water magic. Using air magic against him significantly reduces your damage output, as demonstrated in player first-attempt runs where air spells underperformed badly.

Q: What does Velgar drop?

Velgar always drops his head plus 30-40 Ascension Shards (Power Level 4). The drop table was updated in update 0.12.0 (June 2026) to include ascension shards.

Q: Can I avoid Velgar's random attacks while exploring Ashenfall?

Partially. His dragonbreath and meteors are blocked inside caverns and other interiors (0.8.2), and meteors are blocked by player-built roofing (0.7.3). After defeating him, he stops attacking entirely (0.10.1).
